Surgical Services

Surgical Services - Click for larger view.The Department of Surgical Services at Columbia Memorial Hospital has specialized units that offer a full range of diagnostic and surgical procedures. We use the latest technology, and provide a compassionate environment in order to meet the physical and psychosocial needs of our patients. Our multidisciplinary team provides all aspects of care for our patients and addresses the concerns of family members with compassion, in order to alleviate any anxieties they may have with the associated procedure. Surgical Services at Columbia Memorial Hospital is located on the third floor of the Kellner Wing. The department is broken down into the following divisions:

Central Sterile Reprocessing (CSR)
Pre-Anesthesia Screening (PAS)
Ambulatory Unit (ASU)

Opertaing Room (OR)
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Gastroenterology (GEU)

Pain Management

Central Sterile Reprocessing (CSR)
CSR has certified technicians to process instruments and supplies for the Operating Room, Emergency Department and the outlying clinics.

Pre-Anesthesia Screening (PAS)
Pre- operative evaluation and testing. As a convenience to healthy elective surgical patients, PAS also offers One-Step and Fast Track Systems.

Ambulatory Unit (ASU)
Pre- and postoperative care for same day surgery patients. Other procedures offered on the ASU unit includes but is not limited to:
• PICC line insertion
• Blood Administration
• Antibiotic therapy
• Oncology Treatments
• Minor Diagnostic procedures

We have a new Easy Care room for people receiving blood administration, antibiotic therapy or oncology treatments such as chemotherapy. The room has special lounge chairs with TVs and VCRs to make treatments as easy as possible for patients. Amenities such as light refreshments for patient comfort are also provided. Operating Room (OR)
The Operating Room offers the latest in technology and procedures, and performs a critical element in the Transfusion Free Medicine Program. Our critical care nurses are experts in Cell Saver (operative blood salvage) procedures. This Hospital also has initiated a “KIDZ” program, which allows children between the ages of 3 and 10 years to tour the OR and meet with nurses pre-operatively. Some of the general areas of expertise performed within our facility include:

• Urological
• Vascular

We do not perform open-heart surgery, neurosurgery or organ transplant surgery.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
The recovery room (PACU) offers the latest in monitoring equipment for immediate post surgery care by skilled critical care nurses. PACU nurses also coordinate and train other RN’s in Cell Saver (operative blood salvage) procedures. Our RN Staff in the Post Anesthesia Care unit are all ACLS Certified.

Gastroenterology (GEU)
This unit specializes in the following procedures performed by board certified gastroenterologists. Over 90% of the procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

• Esophogastroduodenoscopy (EGD)
• Sigmoidoscopy
• Colonoscopy
• Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
• Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG)

Our RN Staff in the Gastroenterology unit are all ACLS Certified.

Pain Management
This unit specializes in the treatment and care of chronic pain patients on an outpatient basis, utilizing the latest fluoroscopically guided treatment techniques. Our RN Staff in the Pain Management unit are all ACLS Certified.

Staffing levels are high in the Columbia Memorial Hospital surgical department, with an emphasis on professionalism, and a high rate of the staff obtaining advanced degrees and certifications in their area of expertise.

A spacious waiting room is designated for families of surgical patients. A conference room is also provided for the doctor or patient representative to take family members aside privately to discuss their loved one’s procedure and post operative care needs.
