Family Birth Place Services
The Family Birth Place is an award-winning home-like environment where mothers labor, deliver and recuperate in the same room under the direction of skilled obstetric nurses. The Family Birth Place offers private rooms with bath, that is warm, inviting, and family-centered.
The Family Birth Place offers, "Quiet Hours". Between the hours of 1pm and 4pm daily our patients do not accept visitors in an effort to promote family bonding. During this time mom, baby and support person receive education and the much needed rest before discharge.
Parents in our area have their choice of either male or female obstetricians or nurse midwives to handle their delivery. The hospital’s Department of Anesthesia provides a full range of pain control options for mothers in labor.
The Family Birth Place was also one of only 19 obstetrical units in New York State to receive the Special Delivery Award presented by the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics. This is given to hospitals with 90% of their staff certified in neonatal resuscitation. Columbia Memorial Hospital received the award with 100% of our professional staff certified in this lifesaving procedure for newborn babies. Every professional on the unit is re-certified every two years.
Our unit is staffed with Certified Lactation Consultants for those mothers choosing to breast feed. We also offer Child Birth classes to familiarize mothers and their support person with the unit and preparation of their new arrival.
