Columbia Memorial Hospital opens Center for Wound Care

Columbia Memorial Hospital's Center for Wound Care was officially opened recently in the Columbia-Greene Long Term Care nursing facility in Jefferson Heights, Catskill.

The Center provides diagnosis and treatment of chronic, non-healing wounds.

Difficult-to-heal wounds can result from injury, disease, diabetes, and many other conditions. Non-healing wounds sometimes lead to serious complications. According to industry sources, about five million Americans suffer from chronic open wounds. Most wounds can be healed with appropriate, comprehensive treatment.

The services of the Center for Wound Care at Columbia Memorial Hospital are designed to integrate protocols to ensure that patients get maximum care. Dr. Luis Jacome, a surgeon at Columbia Memorial, is the Medical Director of the Center. He has developed a set of wound treatment protocols. If necessary, after initial treatment, Jacome will refer patients to another physician, nutritionist, or healthcare professional depending on the type of wound the patient has.

The center is currently treating over 45 patients and hopes to expand its hours. Not only does the center treat outpatients, but it can admit someone to the nursing facility to treat acute wounds that require skilled nursing care. The only other wound care centers in our area are located in either Albany or Poughkeepsie.
