Hospital to offer colon cancer information

Columbia Memorial Hospital, in cooperation with Columbia Greene Community College, will offer an educational presentation on Colon Cancer on Wednesday, February 9 from 12 noon to 1 pm at Columbia Greene Community College's Faculty room. Jeff Monkash, MD will provide
information on screening procedures, symptoms, and treatment. Colon cancer is the second most deadly cancer, killing more people than breast cancer or prostate cancer. Colon cancer is 90 percent curable when it is detected in its early stages. If not detected, it typically goes unnoticed until it has spread beyond the intestines - at which point the five year survival rate is less than 60 percent. Dr Monkash has been an attending physician in the Department of Medicine since 1983. He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. Dr Monkash's special interests are in preventive medicine and rural health care.
