Columbia Memorial Offers New Permanent Birth Control Procedure
(Hudson, NY - April 5, 2007) – A minimally invasive and permanent birth control procedure is now being offered by the Women's Health Center at Columbia Memorial Hospital as an alternative to tubal ligation.
Called the Essure procedure, it is done in an ambulatory surgery setting under sedation. A vaginal approach is used to place small surgical-grade metal coils into the fallopian tubes, eliminating the need for surgical incisions in the abdomen.
"The coils create an inflammatory response resulting in tubal blockage. This reaction is irreversible. The patient never feels this response. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and has clear advantages over the traditional laparoscopic approach to tubal ligation. Since no incisions are made in the abdomen, this lessens surgical risks and speeds recovery time with this procedure, says says Marcel Hinds, MD, one of the physicians doing this procedure at the hospital.
"The Essure is the better procedure as well for those who have had prior surgery or for those who are obese or have high risk factors. There is very little discomfort," assures Hinds.
Dr. Hinds says that women awaiting the procedure must take birth control pills or receive an injection of depo provera.Three months after the procedure an X-RAY test called a hysterosalpingogram is done to confirm the position of the coils. After this test confirms successful placement, a woman can rely on the ESSURE implants for birth control. The Essure procedure is 99% effective, according to Hinds.
To augment this procedure, Columbia Memorial has invested in a state-of-the-art hysteroscope with superior optics and smaller working channels, to ensure the comfort of patients undergoing this less invasive procedure.
