Hospital emergency department presents at national nursing forum
(Hudson, NY - August 1, 2007 ) – Columbia Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department’s presentation at The Emergency Nurses Association’s national leadership conference was one of thirteen chosen from hundreds submitted nationally.
The poster presentation, entitled A Management Strategy: Development of an Emergency Preparedness Plan, was represented by Barbara Brady RN, MSN, Lori Puff, RN and Teri Kisselbrack, RN at the annual convention at the Hynes Center in Boston. The presentation described how the hospital participated in a hazard vulnerability analysis of the community disaster plan, helping to identify weaknesses in order to develop a plan of correction.
According to Brady, the poster focused on the improvement initiatives, including the development of a plan for decontamination and for community medication dispensing, an update of the existing evacuation plans and the creation of a manual incorporating job descriptions and organizational charts from the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS).
Drills and in-services were emphasized as ongoing and essential to maintaining the facility’s emergency preparedness.
“Many nurses from different parts of the country and at different phases of their own emergency preparedness plan stopped by to ask questions and exchange information.
It was great to be able to share experiences and discuss solutions with other emergency department RNs in this dynamic environment!,” said Brady.
