Hospital donors once again exceed blood drive goals

Staff from Columbia Memorial Hospital and other donors who continually support the hospital’s Blood Drive for the American Red Cross, have once again exceeded the goal of the drive. According to Joy Nadeau, phlebotomist with Columbia Memorial’s laboratory, the goal was 156 pints. Actual donations as of the end of June totaled 207 pints, a 33% increase so far. The drive, which began last September, runs until August 31.

“We have had such successful blood drives because we have a core group of donors from almost every department in the hospital and patient care centers as well as the community,” said Nadeau.

“They make it to just about every drive and frequently bring new donors with them – they’re our best promoters.”  Nadeau said that the hospital’s donors range from ages 16 to 70 plus years old.

“We also have a great group of people at the registration desk and the canteen – they put a little fun in the process and it puts donors at ease. The raffle winners are always happy but it’s obvious that’s not why they donate – it’s all about giving a gift that can’t be bought.” she said.

According to American Red Cross online sources, every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor. Currently only 3 out of every 100 people in America donate blood.

The process is simple, said Nadeau. Donors provide basic personal health information in a private setting with a blood bank technician and also show a form of identification. Then their iron levels, blood pressure and pulse are checked to protect their well being. Staff clean the area and insert a needle for the blood drawing procedure which lasts anywhere from 7-10 minutes. When completed, the needle is removed and a bandage is put on the donor’s arm. Refreshements are available to help the donor adjust to the slight decrease in fluid volume.

“When you complete the donation,” said Nadeau,” you walk away with a great sense of satisfaction.”
