Cathy Sohotra, much to her surprise, was
given the Daisy Award at the hospital’s first time
presentation on Wednesday, September
16th in the main lobby.
The Daisy Award is an award that we
adopted here from a family who wishes to
honor and remember a loved one who has
passed away. Patrick Barnes was sick for
many months of a disease attacking the
immune system (DAISY). Once he passed
away, his family dedicated this award to him.
It honors someone committed to excellence
in patient care.
More than 30 people were nominated
from a variety of Columbia Memorial departments:
M4, 4A, 2A, OB, ED, CCU, OR, 5A,
Ambulatory, Transportation, Dietary, and
Housekeeping.
The Magnet Council for Recruitment and Retention reviewed all the nomination forms and voted on the winner. Nominees all received a Daisy pin, which they display
on their ID badges.
Sohotra was presented with a hand carved
stone sculpture from Africa, a certificate in a
leather portfolio and a pin that states Daisy
Award.
The unit of the winner will receive cinnamon
buns. Why these? While a patient in the
hospital, Patrick asked his mother to bring
in some extra refreshments for the staff
caring for him. Cinnamon buns were comforting
to him and one of the only foods he
could eat. The aroma of cinnamon reminds
the family of excellence in care.
The family also recognizes that it takes a
team to care for someone. That team picks
up the slack when a staff member gives a
little extra attention to a patient. That is
why the whole unit is rewarded.
We ALWAYS want to provide excellent
patient care!
