Job
Shadowing Program
Work-Based
Learning
Overview:
Job
shadowing is one of the most popular work-based learning
activities because it provides students with opportunities
to gather information on a wide variety of career possibilities
before deciding where they want to focus their attention.
The student shadows employees during the experience, trying
to gain an understanding of what adults do in the world
of work, how this is connected to their classroom experiences,
and the process of career exploration. The purpose of the
program will allow students a context for understanding
the |
connection
between school and careers. Students will:
Begin to identify career interest
Observe the daily routine of hospital staff in a variety of positions
Develop and apply communication skill by interacting with and
interviewing staff
Navigate the community by traveling to and from the job shadow
site
Begin to understand the connection between school, work and achieving
goals
Program
Description:
A
one-day program where students are provided an opportunity to
participate in a "shadow" experience directly in the clinical
and non-clinical arena. The goal is to provide students an up-close
look at what a "real job" is like and how the skills they learn
in school are put to use in the workplace.
Job
shadowing is an unpaid experience where a student follows members
of hospital staff for a short period of time to learn about a
particular occupation. This activity helps students explore the
world of work and the range of opportunities
found within an occupational area. The objective is to provide
the students with an opportunity to learn as much as possible
from a person working at a job in which he/she has expressed an
interest. By shadowing a staff member, students will get a firsthand
perspective of what adults do in the world of work in healthcare.
Additionally, the students will better understand the process
of career exploration as they identify possible career interests,
skills required by particular jobs, different work environments
and the connection between school, work and achieving goals.
