Emergency
Services
| ''Our
staff live in the community and see themselves
as community members taking care of their
friends and neighbors. We are not a large,
impersonal city hospital where you are
treated like a stranger. When you walk
through the doors of our Emergency Department,
you can expect rapid, attentive, personalized
care.'' Norm
Chapin, M.D., Chief of Emergency Medicine |

The
Columbia Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Department
is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by Board Certified
emergency physicians, on-call physicians, physician assistants,
Emergency Certified registered nurses, and experienced
patient care assistants.
Last year our Emergency Department saw 34,000 people,
an average of 90-95 per day. Despite our large volume
of patients, we have instituted a triage program that
assures patients they will be seen by a nurse within
3-5 minutes of arrival. |
|
| |
|
| Patients
requiring a higher level of care or more specialized
treatment at a trauma center, can receive the emergency,
high-quality care and condition stabilization they need
at Columbia Memorial and then be transported to an appropriate
Trauma Center, such as Albany Medical Center or St. Peters
in Albany, or the Westchester Burn Center. We facilitate
the transport of patients by helicopter when necessary. In
1999 the Emergency Department moved to the hospital's
new Kellner Wing, a spacious facility that allows
us to see more patients. It
has a pleasant waiting
room with |
| two
televisions, adequate parking, separate walk-in and ambulance
entrances and a central triage area where nurses can see
who needs immediate attention. The department is located
right next to our new surgery suite, which can save critical
time in life-threatening situations. |

| Services |
|
| |
|
• Bedside
registration. As part of our personalized care approach,
we do not register patients before treating them.
• EKG
monitoring and other high tech diagnostic equipment for heart and lung patients.
Our recently purchased half-million dollar portable ECHO machine allows us to
diagnose cardiac and certain types of lung problems quickly and accurately, a
service not typically found outside of large, urban hospitals.
|
|
• Psychiatric
evaluations. We have a psychiatric evaluation area and
two rooms designated specifically for psychiatric patients.
• A
SANE Program. Our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is trained
to provide compassionate, expert care for victims of sexual
assault. We also have special equipment that can take highly
magnified pictures for forensic purposes.
|
|
• A 6-bed Prompt Care Unit. We welcome patients with non-life-threatening problems to come in anytime.
