Critical Care
We
have excellent cardiologists and pulmonologists who are
not only knowledgeable doctors, but excellent communicators.
They know how to convey compassion and caring, especially
when it comes to dealing with patients’ families.
Columbia Memorial currently has an 8-bed combined medical, surgical,
cardiac ICU. This will be expanded to 12 beds within the next
two years.
Who
we treat:
Surgical
patients
Patients
who have had major abdominal, kidney, lung, or vascular surgery
begin their recovery in our Intensive Care Unit.
Cardiac
patients
Patients
who have suffered a major heart attack, significant arrhythmias
or who are in congestive heart failure are initially treated in
our Intensive Care Unit.
Medical
patients
Often
patients with multi-system disease, unusual infections, or serious
respiratory disease require the technology and close observation
provided by the Intensive Care Unit.
The
technology available includes state of the art cardiac monitoring
equipment, ventilators for patients who need assistance breathing
and beds which enable patients to assume a sitting or standing
position without leaving their bed.
As the only critical care unit for 30 miles in all directions,
Columbia Memorial is very busy. However, with a patient to nurse
ratio of two to one, and often one to one, we still offer individual,
personalized care.
Our
nurses have extensive ICU experience and overall experience levels
ranging from 10 to 30 years. All hospital critical care nurses
are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
Our ICU participates in the Columbia Memorial Transfusion Free
Medicine Program. Unlike most ICUs where huge tubes are used
to draw blood from patients, taking more blood than necessary,
we use small tubes and try to limit blood draws for the comfort
and health of our patients.
