Cardio-Pulmonary

"A lot of hospitals have broken up their respiratory departments, and don’t focus on the respiratory system. At CMH you’ll always get treatment by a trained respiratory therapist." Cathy Hurin, RT, Director of Cardio-Pulmonary Services

Cardio-Pulmonary - Click for larger view.Cardio-Pulmonary Services at Columbia Memorial do diagnostic testing for any type of breathing or cardiac problems.

We use the latest technology to find out what’s wrong with patients who are having heart or lung problems. Our respiratory therapists provide treatment for certain types of lung problems, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Tests we perform:
Pulmonary function
Arterial blood gas
Pulse Oximetry
Echocardiograms
Halter Monitoring
Cardiac Stress Testing
EEG and EKG
TEE (Trans-Esophageal Echocardiogram)

In the hospital we have four board-certified cardiologists and three board-certified pulmonologists on staff. We also have EKG technicians and respiratory therapists available around the clock, seven days a week.

Our new state-of-the-art ventilators provide the most effective mode of breathing assistance, which cuts down the amount of time a patient needs to be on the ventilator.

Our new echocardiogram equipment has extremely high resolution to show heart function and help diagnose valve and other heart abnormalities. We have two registered cardiac stenographers who are specially trained in echocardiogram testing.

We also perform the highly specialized TEE (Trans-Esophageal Echocardiogram), where the patient is sedated and a probe is inserted in the throat so that pictures of the heart can be taken from inside the body, providing a better picture of the heart. This procedure is performed by a board certified cardiologist with special training in this modality.

All our therapists, nurses and physicians are NRP certified (Neo-Natal Resuscitation Provider) from the American Heart Association. This means that the entire team that participates in a delivery can resuscitate a newborn, a level of expertise that is not required by most hospitals.

As part of our commitment to the community, our department provides community education for asthmatic children in both Greene and Columbia counties.
