Information about this innovative tobacco-cessation program

As part of our admission process at Columbia Memorial Hospital, all tobacco using patients who need support to quit will be identified. Then, our innovative cessation program will be implemented by a trained tobacco cessation professional who will provide counseling and follow-up after discharge.

The second part of the program is a community-wide education program conducted by a certified health educator. The educator will provide forums on smoking cessation, conduct first-line counseling and refer individuals to the specialists for continued second-line intensive therapy. The educators will also work with staff of agencies and companies to implement a systems approach for tracing tobacco dependence in organizations.

This innovative "Quit Program," now available at Columbia Memorial Hospital, provides trained tobacco cessation specialists who have mental health counseling backgrounds to help you or a loved one stop smoking and live a healthier life.

Goal

Reduction of tobacco use through a coordinated, twin county-wide effort that employs the services of:

. community health educators who will identify the citizens ready to make a quit

  attempt;

. trained tobacco cessation specialists using intensive therapeutic and supportive

  therapies.

Complementing community objectives

. Identify all tobacco using individuals who are treated in Columbia & Greene

  counties;

. Provide a standard protocol of tobacco cessation therapies and support for

  tobacco using patients;

. Extend follow-up activities to all clients after discharge;

. Assist staff in implementing a systems approach to tobacco use identification and

  treatment;

. Deliver a smoking cessation program targeted to agency staff.
