CMH participates in Capital District
Great American Smokeout
Columbia Memorial Hospital, a leader in tobacco cessation these last two years with their innovative Quit Program, participated in the Great American Smokeout Day (Thursday, November 17) with a coalition of 15 other Capital Region hospitals who all announced plans to implement smoke-free grounds by January 1, 2007.
This is believed to be the largest such alliance of health care organizations in the nation to go smoke-free without a legal mandate to do so, according to Pamela Rehak, Vice President for Corporate Communications at Seton Health in Troy.
Columbia Memorial Hospital, using monies obtained through a grant from New York State Tobacco Control in 2004, became one of the first hospitals to implement such a policy. In January of 2005, Columbia Memorial announced plans to be smoke free in June 2006, allowing an 18-month window for staff who are smokers to be able to cope with the tobacco free campus policy.
According to Jane Ehrlich, hospital Chief Executive Officer, “We took the step to go tobacco free because in the face of the evidence regarding tobacco use and its impact on human health it was the only responsible course of action. Our mission includes the promotion and maintenance of good health. This step had to be taken. We are pleased to see so many hospitals in the area arrive at a similar conclusion and look forward to our continued role as a resource to organizations and agencies in the twin counties with regard to tobacco treatment”.
The Greater Capital Region Healthcare Tobacco-Free Initiative, formed in June, described plans for other hospitals to go smoke-free by January 1, 2007, in order to advance the health of patients, visitors, staff and the community. Each provider has its own plan and schedule to remove smoking areas from its grounds and offer persons help to quit smoking.
Participants besides Jane Ehrlich and Mary Daggett, Director of Community Health Services at Columbia Memorial, also included
Gino J. Pazzaglini, president and CEO of Seton Health; Steven P. Boyle, president and CEO, St. Peter’s Health Care Services; and
Karen Carpenter-Palumbo, regional vice president of the American Cancer Society.
The hospitals included in the event were: Albany Medical Center, Amsterdam Memorial Hospital; Basssett Healthcare/Cooperstown; Bassett Healthcare/Schoharie; Bellevue Woman’s Hospital; Columbia Memorial Hospital; Ellis Hospital; Glens Falls Hospital; Northeast Health/Albany Memorial Hospital; Northeast Health/Samaritan Hospital; Saratoga Hospital; Seton Health / St. Mary’s Hospital; St. Mary’s Hospital, Amsterdam; St. Clare’s Hospital; St. Peter’s Hospital; Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital.
